Midnight-Blue Marble

Production of my next illustrated book is underway. The Midnight-Blue Marble, written by Melanie Jackson will be released in the fall with Gumboot books.

It's the first is a series of Young Readers mystery novels. In this story the young heroine, Aillie Mooney's distant relative leaves a trail of clues to uncover the mystery of a stolen diamond from Mari Antoinnettes lifetime. Cover to the left

April, Cabaret

In April I volunteered as Assistant Stage Manager and assistant set painter at the Guild Theatre (Whitehorse) for their production of Cabaret. It was a riot of fun and choas and colour and song and an amazing cast of lots of people including a very talented orchestra of seven local musicians. I took a few photos during rehearsal.

February, the Museum of Capitalism

In February I participated in a group show in Berlin called The Museum of Capitalism. My peice is below, titled, Wenn du Geld Liebst, Lass es Frei. (eng: If you love money, set it free) The little boy is releasing an origami butterfly (five $ bill) from one of a few dozen jars, each with a major bank logo on them. Interpret as you will. The show also featured a performance by the Yes Men. Click the art to link to the Museum of Capitalism's blog.

Just a few new things this week.

• I now have a photo gallery. Click the blue PHOTOS icon to the left to see a list of albums. I'm not sure how this related to my rejection of Facebook...especially because i'm tempted to put a comments section in. Sharing is caring...right?

Be Berlin

• Last week's "Seeing Eye to Eye" charity event in Vancouver included the first viewing of my latest painting, Be Berlin (36" x 12". oil on canvas). To go along with it, I wrote an artist's statement that I'd like to share here about why I illustrate:

Eleanor Rosenberg on Imagination and Storytelling:

"What drives my work is primarily storytelling, and an individual's ability to imagine scenarios, be affected by them, and find a connection to their own lives.

I like to collaborate with storytellers in different genres. Retelling a story in a different form means the story can exist for a new audience; I get excited about visually recreating a song with compelling lyrics, a poem that demands a mental picture, or a striking or emotional piece of theatre, to name a few.

Recently I've been struggling with the thought that I should share my own experiences. I have heaps of material from years of world travel, but my own stories don't provoke my imagination. Because memory provides such a clear picture, it would be boring to recreate a scene I've already seen. When I compose an illustration based on a well told story I'm challenged to honour the original intention but also feel free to interpret it. I consciously layer different levels of information into each image. Usually there is a narrative, relationships between figures, details about setting or the story's emotional affect. The intention is that the more time one spends looking the more rewarding the story becomes.

On a personal level I enjoy indulging in what that story made me feel and as a bonus I'm able to revisit that part of my imagination every time I look at it there-after!"

• Also in recent news: friends and clients TigerMilk Collective will be producing a theatre piece in New York. Here's the flyer I put together for them. Click for a link to info about the show:

The History of My Domestication and Terrible Girls

January 14, 2009

What's it like in Whitehorse, you ask? It's currently a balmy 2 degrees. Last week it was minus 38. Somewhere in between I spent a day taking photos of a heavy snow fall. Check it.

Happy New Year! For the first time ever, I brought in the new year by jumping into the ocean in Deep Cove! Talk about exhilerating. I was in Vancouver for almost two weeks enjoying snowball fights and sledding, eating and playing games, sliding around the icy town, and now I'm back to minus 30 weather, but hey, it's dry. There should be a lot of interesting news coming up. Most recently I've been added to the aasman website. There's a write up to go with it. Click to read:

In other news, I've designed a tattoo for my brother that I'll show when he gets it imprinted on his body FOREVER! (It's beautiful so forever is good). In a few days I'll have illustrations featured on a website for a radio program on Berlin's National Public Radio.

Coming up real soon, I'm showing paintings at a charity event, "Seeing Eye to Eye" that raises funds for Operation Eyesight. It's an evening of interdisciplinary local talent; bands include: Fully Loaded, The Racoons, Adam Woodall Band, Tessa Amy, and Friends With Liam; artists are myself, Simon Hiauk, Lindsay Mclennan, and Amy Alto; and a theatre piece titled "Katie And Frank", written by Theresa Rebeck, and starring Christina Gooding and Hamish Allan-Headley. Directed by Matthew Harrison. Come and support us and Operation Eyesight:

Wahoo! I also just figured out how to make a web gallery. Now I can share like all you crazy facebookers. Check out my last few weeks through a lense : : click : :

Global Peace Network is hosting another Sunday night of vibrant world music and delectable tastes. Proceeds of this registered Canadian charity go to projects in sub-Saharan Africa. They're doing all sorts of incredible work. I made them a poster to help explain what the donations acheive. Click for more details about the event.

breakfast

September 25, 2008

This is the part where I can let my hair down and put out into the world, to whoever wants to listen, whatever's on my mind.

So, I'll be trying to keep myself and your person entertained and/or updated about my whereabouts and activities.

I'm currently living in Langdale on the Sunshine coast. That's my breakfast spot to the left. It's been almost two years since I've lived in Canada and I'm obviosuly greatly enamoured by the mountains around me. I'm spending a month here reflecting on past ideas and researching future endeavors, and doing things like updating my website. Which is also new!

IMPORTANT! If you see anything that needs adjustments, please let me know asap.

I'll probably be filling in a few gaps in this section. Cool stuff that's happened over the past two years in Europe and Asia. So keep looking!
